Each Encourager is given training with an emphasis on the “hidden rules” of each socio-economic class. During October, November, January—April, Encouragers come to their selected school at the same time each week. They spend 30 minutes with each of two children. The material covered is selected by the teacher.
This is the most valuable hour each week. Each program comes manned with a facilitator, who is on site to keep things running smoothly.
The philosophy behind this small but effective effort is simply that one-on-one relationships can and do reap academic success. Undivided attention from a caring adult on a regular basis (weekly) can make a huge difference in an indifferent at-risk child.
